Wood is one of the most important natural resources in Latvia. In Latvia, the forest area calculated per capita (1.16 ha) is 4.3 times larger than the European average, and the wood resources per capita (200 m3) are 5.8 times higher. In 1998, the proportion of the forest-related branches in the Latvian export balance was 35.7% or 347 million LVL.
