1.gif - 49 Bytes Inland waters occupy 2,543 km2 or 4% of the Latvian territory. Intensive human activities in catchment areas contribute significantly to the discharge of nutrients into Latvian lakes and rivers, accelerating the process of natural eutrophication is being strongly accelerated. Eutrophication of water bodies and degradation of water ecosystems is recognised as a priority environmental problem in Latvia.

The integration into the EU will promote the development of a uniform legal framework, monitoring, accountancy and reporting system. Already now, the transposition of the requirements of the EU water resources directives into Latvian legislation is an on-going process. With the implementation of the EU Water Resources Framework Directive, the integrated management of river basins will be set as a priority.
