Latvia is located opposite to the central part of the Baltic Sea - Gothland Basin. The total length of the coastal line is 490 km. Practically, the sea enlarges the area of the country by more than 40%.
Eutrophication of water bodies and degradation of water ecosystems are recognised as priority environmental problems in Latvia. This also refers to the Sea waters.
