Natural background radiation is generated by more than 300 natural radioactive elements in the earth’s crust together with cosmic radiation. In the destruction of bedrock containing uranium and thorium, the radioactive rare gas radon is formed, which together with its destruction products, provides more than half of the exposure to humans. Another common natural radio-nuclide, radioactive potassium K-40, the proportion of which in the total amount of potassium is 0.01%, alone provides a 0.4 mSv dosage yearly (40% of the yearly admissible dosage).
