Fish resources and their utilisation traditionally have had a significant role in the Latvian National economy. Waters of the Latvian economic zone cover more than 10% of the total area of the Baltic Sea (28,000 km2). The main sea fish resources in Latvia are formed by industrially important species such as Baltic herring (Clupea harengus membras), sprat (Sprattus sprattus), cod (Gadus morhua), salmon (Salmo salar), flounder (Platichthys flesus) and turbot (Psetta maxima). Compared to the sea catch, the catch in inland waters is small.
The proportion of the fish products within the GDP in 1998 was 2.5%. More than 90% of the fish products were exported, contributing 3.1% of the total export balance in 1998. Although this figure was lower than in previous years, the foreign trade balance for fish products remained positive.
