About the State of the Environment Report
Welcome to the Latvian State of the Environment Report in the World Wide Web!
Among the tasks of the newly established Latvian Environment Agency is annual publishing of the State of the Environment Report of Latvia. The aim of this publication is to inform society about the quality of the environment, environmental impacts arising from the economic activities, and the current developments in environmental sectors in Latvia.
To make the Report available also for foreign readers, a State of the Environment Report and shorter WWW publication has been prepared in English.
The structure of the WWW publication consists of three parts: state, pressure, response. This approach is based on the state-pressure-response model of the Organisation for Economical Co-operation and Development (OECD) adapting it to the information reflected in the Latvian State of the Environment Report 98:
- state refer to the current state of the environment, for example, concentration of substances in the air or water, population size, resource amounts;
- pressure refer to the pressure from human activities on the environment, for example, emissions, extracted resources;
- response refer to activities of human society to improve the state of the environment, for example, protected areas.
The WWW publication has been prepared thanks to the BALLERINA III Web/HTML Training Workshop organised by UNEP GRID-Arendal on 10 - 18 September 1998 in Arendal, Norway.
