1.gif - 49 Bytes The inland waters of Latvia occupy 2,543 km2 or 4% of the territory. Intensive human activities around rivers and lakes and in catchment areas contribute significantly to the discharge of nutrients into Latvian lakes and rivers, and as a result into the Gulf of Riga and the Baltic Sea. Thus, the process of the natural eutrophication is being strongly accelerated. Eutrophication of water bodies and degradation of water ecosystems are recognised as priority environmental problems in Latvia.
