Soil is one of the most significant renewable natural resources in Latvia. Fertility of the soil is essential for agricultural production. Degraded soil is renewed very slowly. The soil suitable for agriculture is being used continuously in Latvia. Agricultural practices have affected not only the fertility of soil, but also the environment in general. The main problems of soil quality in Latvia are natural acidification of soil and insufficient organic matter content in arable land soils.
