1.gif - 49 Bytes Latvia is located opposite to the central part of the Baltic Sea - Gothland Basin. The total length of the coastal line is 490 km, including the coast of the Baltic Sea (182 km), and the coast of the Gulf of Riga (308 km). Practically, the sea enlarges the area of the country by more than 40%.

Eutrophication of water bodies and degradation of water ecosystems are recognised as priority environmental problems in Latvia. This also refers to the Sea waters.
