The territory of Latvia is part of the Baltic artesian basin, formed of aquifers and complexes of variable thickness, generally 500 to 1500 m. Calcium hydrogen carbonate waters prevail in subsoil up to some hundred meters deep. Their total natural resources are estimated at approximately 13 million m3 per 24 hours, of which 490 thousand m3 per 24 hours are used for water supply. Natural groundwater sources not suitable for water supply are found in some specific, local areas affected by deep saline waters, intrusion of sea water or other specific processes.
The territory of Latvia is rich also in various mineral waters. Slightly saline waters, mainly chloride-sodium waters, are withdrawn and bottled as table mineral water.
