Latvia is rich in groundwater resources. Except some local areas, water supply can be ensured throughout Latvia using groundwater of drinking water quality. Groundwater quality generally meets the requirements of the EU standards for drinking water, except iron content and hardness are relatively high. In the 1996 law "On Subsoil", groundwater is defined as a natural resource of state importance.
