1.gif - 49 Bytes Fish resources and their utilisation traditionally have had significant role in the Latvian national economy. The Latvian sea border from the Nida fishing village in the south to Ainazi in the north is 475 km long and constitutes one third of the total state border length. Waters of the Latvian economic zone cover more than 10% of the total area of the Baltic Sea, thus an additional area of 28,000 km2 falls under the Latvian jurisdiction. Practically, the sea enlarges the area of the country by more than 40%. Fish are a key component Latvian marine and fresh water ecosystems.

In the National Environmental Policy Plan of Latvia two of the mentioned priority problems are connected with fish resources: reduction of biodiversity and non-sustainable use of natural resources.
