Economical activities cause air emissions of different substances. Atmosphere is continuously being polluted with diverse gases which can have various impact on the environment, - to stimulate greenhouse effect, to contribute to the acidification of soil, forests and water bodies with acid rain, to have a direct impact on human health.
Consistent processes for reducing of emissions of air polluting substances have been started in the territory of Latvia in late 70-ties. However, related to the integration process towards European Union, there will be significant changes necessary in the policy and legislation for air quality, based on the principles of Best Available Technology.
Assessment of air quality is especially important in cities and towns, and near to several industrial activities because air pollution sources are located in these places. Generally, air quality in Latvia can be regarded as satisfactory. An exception is Riga where the air pollution can have adverse impact on human health, vegetation, qualities and usage time of buildings, different equipment and mechanisms.
