About the State of the Environment Report
Welcome to the second Latvian State of the Environment Report in the World Wide Web !
The Environmental Consulting and Monitoring Centre of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development annually publishes the State of the Environment Report of Latvia. The aim of this publication is to inform society about the quality of the environment, environmental impacts arising from the economic activities, and the current developments in environmental sectors in Latvia. The guiding principle and spirit of the National Environmental Policy have still remained unchanged: society and every person have the right to receive information on the quality of the environment and the contribution of the State institutions to its improvement.
To make the Report available also for foreign readers, a State of the Environment Report and shorter WWW publication has been prepared in English.
The WWW publication is structured according to the state-pressure-response model of the Organisation for Economical Co-operation and Development ( OECD ) adapting this approach to the information included in the Latvian State of the Environment Report '97:
- state - refer to the current state of the environment, for example, concentration of substances in the air or water, population size, resource amounts;
- pressure - refer to the pressure from human activities on the environment, for example, emissions, extracted resources;
- response - refer to activities of human society to improve the state of the environment, for example, protected areas.
The WWW publication has been prepared thanks to the BALLERINA III Web/HTML Training Workshop organised by UNEP GRID-Arendal on 10 - 18 September 1998 in Arendal, Norway.
