Only 44% of the annual water discharge from rivers
is contributed from the territory of Latvia. The other 56%
originates from Lithuania, Belarus and Russia, bringing with it
pollution from other countries.
Transboundary water pollution is an important
problem of internal waters which is emphasized in the National
Environmental Protection Policy Plan. The pollution originating
from other countries contains significant levels of all pollutant
groups, particularly nutrients and persistent substances.
The largest rivers receiving pollution from our
neighbouring countries are the Daugava, the Lielupe (Mēmele and Mūsa
near the border), and the Venta.
