Water abstraction

In 2000, water abstraction from surface waters amounted to 55% of the total, ground water - 39%, and quarry and rain water - 6%. Abstraction of both ground and surface water decreased by about two times since 1991. Presently, municipal use accounts for about half of the abstracted ground water. Surface water for water supply is used only in Rîga. The remaining amount of abstracted surface water is used in industry and agriculture.
