Fishery has had a traditional role in the economy of Latvia. The
National Programme for Development of Latvian Fisheries
(1995-2010) has been developed, along with its subprogrammes: the
Fishing Fleet Development Programme (2001-2003), the National
Programme for Restocking of Fish Resources (2001-2010) and the
Fish Processing Industry Development Programme (2001-2006).
Non-sustainable use of resources and decline of biological
diversity are priority problems mentioned in the National
Environmental Protection Policy Plan that are related to fishery.
