The added value of fishery production in the Gross Domestic Product in 2000 was 1.7%. Since 1996, the added value has decreased by two times, mainly due to changes in the export structure in recent years: export value of products decreased while amounts remained stable.

More than 90% of the fish production is exported. While the amount of fish and fish production exported has been relatively stable, and in 2000 reached 149% of the amount in 1994, the export value has declined, mainly due to a fall in prices of exported fish. The export value was also affected negatively by the Russian economic crisis.
