To maintain fish stocks in an environment that has been altered by
human activity, large numbers of immature individuals of various
fish species should be released in Latvia. Yearly the released
numbers should be about 9,000,000 juvenile fish of salmon, trout,
pike-perch, vimba, bream and other species; and about 38,000,000
larvae of trout, lamprey, pike and others. It is expected to
achieve the above amounts of restocking by the year 2005.
In 2000, 14,700,000 juveniles and larvae of various fish
species were released in Latvian waters, which was about 45% more
than in 1991. Compared with the numbers in 1995-1998, they have
been decreasing, but the proportion of released juvenile fish,
which have a better survival rate in comparison with larvae, has
increased.
