The common minerals, which are relatively well studied, form an
important raw material resource in Latvia. Renewable peat
resources and non-renewable building materials and their raw
materials play an important role in the economy of Latvia. Their
extraction is associated with non-sustainable use of natural
resources, landscape degradation, and decreased biological
diversity, which are priority problems defined in the National
Environmental Protection Policy Plan of Latvia.
