Biological agriculture is a form of environmentally friendly
agriculture. The Latvian Rural Development Plan defines biological
agriculture as a priority for financial support. There are more
than 140 farms utilizing biological agriculture production methods,
but in 2000 only 78 farms were certified as such. The total area
of certified biological agricultural farms is 0.2% of the
agricultural land.
The main types of production of biological farms in Latvia are
milk, cereals, potatoes, vegetable, as well as honey and
strawberries. The production does not meet the demand for
biologically grown products.
Actions in the field of biological agriculture will be
supported by the SAPARD programme, in the way of subsidies for
land area and numbers of livestock managed using biological
agricultural methods.
