Soil is one of the most important natural resources. It determines
primary production in terrestrial ecosystems, and serves as the
basis for agricultural production. Soil acts as a filter to
protect ground water, running waters, and water bodies from
chemical and biological pollution. In wet periods in spring and
autumn, water percolation through soil can result in leaching of
pollutants into waters. Soil determines and maintains the
biological diversity of a territory.
Soil degradation and overgrowing of agricultural land are the
main environmental problems in agriculture. Pollution to water
bodies from manure storage locations is also an important problem.
