The surface relief formed mainly after the last glaciation. Most of Latvia is covered by glacial deposits which form the surface relief - various macroforms, mainly uplands and lowlands, and small hills and depressions. The seacoast has formed fairly recently, during the development of the Baltic Sea.

About 75.8% of the land occurs up to 120 m above sea level, and 24.2% is above this height. The mean altitude is 87.2 m above sea level. The highest point is Gaiziòkalns - 311.6 m.
