The surface relief formed mainly after the last glaciation. Most of
Latvia is covered by glacial deposits which form the surface relief
- various macroforms, mainly uplands and lowlands, and small hills
and depressions. The seacoast has formed fairly recently, during the
development of the Baltic Sea.
About 75.8% of the land occurs up to 120 m above sea level, and
24.2% is above this height. The mean altitude is 87.2 m above sea
level. The highest point is Gaiziòkalns - 311.6 m.
