The natural conditions and diversity of Latvia are
determined by its geographical location beside the Baltic Sea, and
the variable relief and hydrology. Human economic activity also had
a significant role in shaping nature development: use of natural
resources, building of homes, and conversion of land for
agricultural.
The priority problems that are addressed by nature protection
policy of Latvia are the decline in biological diversity, landscape
degradation and non-sustainable exploitation of natural resources.
The National Programme on Biological Diversity in Latvia has been
developed, and it was accepted by the Cabinet of Ministers in 2000.
