Calculation of the import/export balance of sulphur and nitrogen shows that import of pollutants is characteristic for Latvia. The import of sulphur and nitrogen from European countries exceeds the emissions from Latvia.

Observations on the transboundary air pollution were begun in the south-western part of Latvia at Rucava in 1988, and in the north-eastern part at Zosçni in 1994.

The total deposition of nitrogen and sulphur at Zosçni is slightly higher than at Rucava, but at both locations, the deposition has decreased since 1995 by about two times.
