| Mean yearly sulphur dioxide
concentrations range from 4-15 µg/m3. Mean monthly
sulphur dioxide concentrations in cities are higher during the
heating season, and lowest during summer. In Nīgrande Pagast, the
changes in concentrations are due to transport of pollution from
the Mažeiķiai oil refinery in Lithuania. In November 1999, there
were two cases when the 1-hour sulphur dioxide concentrations (maximum
463 µg/m3) exceeded the limit values for human health.
