The mean yearly concentrations of benzene ranged from 11 - 43 µg/m3. The highest benzene concentrations were recorded in Jūrmala. The 24-hour maximum admissible concentration (which is in force in Latvia), was exceeded twice in the Rīga centre and once in the Sarkandaugava area of Rīga. In all observation stations, the mean yearly concentrations are higher than the European Union limit values of 5 µg/m3 which will be in force from the year 2010.
