According to data of the Nordic Product Registers, about 30,000
chemical substances and several hundred thousands of their
combinations in products (paints, varnishes, pesticides, mineral
fertilizers, etc.) were sold in the European Community market at
the end of the 1990's.
The numbers of chemicals produced and imported in Latvia are
much smaller (about 800 chemical substances and products in 2000),
but there is a growing trend in their numbers and amounts.
Priority groups of chemical substances are persistent organic
pollutants and heavy metals (mercury, cadmium, lead, chromium,
zinc, nickel, and copper).
