Cargo turnover

The main sources of oil and oil product spills in Latvian marine waters

Aerial surveillance

Accidental spills occur after collisions between ships, beaching on shallows, fire, and equipment failure or its improper operation (while loading, unloading, or bunkering).
The geographic location and features of Latvia, its free-ice harbours, and the developed transport infrastructure, are ideal prerequisites for operation of harbours. Seven small harbour are used for loading of local cargo, and the large harbours (Rīga, Ventspils, and Liepāja) offer transit-cargo services. About 1/5 of the ships entering the harbours are tankers. The proportion of oil and oil products in the total cargo transported more than half. In 2000, the total cargo turnover increased by 5.7%, in comparison to that in 1999.
